Zubair is located 20 kilometres southwest of the city of Basrah in southern Iraq. The field was one of a handful of giant oil discoveries made in southern Iraq in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was the first of these fields to be discovered and the first to be put onstream in 1951. Zubair's production has since been surpassed by the larger Rumaila, West Qurna 1 and West Qurna 2.
