Report summary
Gabon presidential election crisis points to longer-term malaise. The re-election of incumbent, Ali Bongo, has led to widespread violence in the capital Libreville, as well as the oil-hub Port Gentil. The Sogara refinery, which is in Port Gentil and the country's only refinery, has been shut since the violence started. Supporters of opposition candidate, Jean Ping, claim electoral fraud and have clashed with security forces. In return, the government has bombed the opposition headquarters and arrested over 1,000 people. These reprisals show that for the time being, Bongo has the support of the security forces. However the opposition remains united and further mass protest is likely.
