Report summary
Senegal has been largely overlooked by the upstream industry, despite a legacy of stability and relative prosperity. The Senegal-Bove Basin sits on a passive margin in the eastern Atlantic and shares much of its geology with its northern neighbour Mauritania. Although an active petroleum system has been proven, Senegal's production has been limited to small volumes of gas from the onshore Diam Niadio field. A potentially transformational basin opening pair of Cretaceous deepwater discoveries were made in 2014 by Cairn Energy. The FAN and SNE oil fields were made on the Sangomar Deep Block in October and November 2014 respectively and initial indications are they hold over 500 million barrels combined. Further appraisal and exploration on Sangomar Deep in 2016 and beyond will help better define the finds as well as the basin's longer term prospects. Interest in the deepwater was further increased by Kosmos' cross border Tortue (a.k.a Ahmeyim) gas discovery made in Mauritania.
