The Point Thomson field is located both on and offshore 97 kilometres (60 miles) to the east of Prudhoe Bay. Point Thomson was discovered in 1977 by a consortium led by Exxon. The unit lies just to the west of ANWR (the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), a federally protected wildlife area. The field holds the North Slope's second largest proven reserves of natural gas after Prudhoe Bay.
