The Austin Chalk is an upper Cretaceous geologic formation that sits on top of the Eagle Ford. It was originally developed as a conventional play with shallow vertical wells targeting the Chalk’s extensive network of natural fractures. Operators now apply horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to extract oil and gas. Sweet spots are highly productive, but lack predictability. • Horizontal development in the Austin Chalk remains in its early stages. Production of gas in particular is projected to continue growth through the end of the 2030s.
