Samarco is a 50/50 Brazilian joint venture between Vale and BHP. The company runs a fully integrated iron ore mining, concentration, transport and pelletising operation. Pellets are shipped to the seaborne export market from the company's port facility at Ponta Ubu in Espírito Santo state. In 2015, Samarco faced a major crisis following the rupture of two tailings dams and long-lasting environmental and social impacts. Operations remained suspended for five years, resuming only in late 2020. Since then, the company has progressed through a staged ramp-up. Phase 2 was successfully completed in late 2024, which restored 60% of its total installed capacity. Looking ahead, Phase 3 implementation is expected to further increase capacity, allowing Samarco to reach 100% nameplate capacity by 2029.
