Barro Alto began operating as a mine in 2005, supplying ore to Codemin. Anglo completed a feasibility study in 2006 and received Board approval to build a smelter. The company later built a dedicated processing plant at Barro Alto, commissioning it in 2011 at a capital cost of US$1.9 billion. The operation faced furnace issues after commissioning, limiting production. Anglo redesigned and rebuilt the furnaces in 2014 and 2015, resolving these problems. Following the asset review initiated in 2023 and BHP's takeover bid, Anglo American announced plans for major structural changes to accelerate delivery of its strategic priorities. These changes included exploring options for care and maintenance and divestment of its nickel assets. On 18 February 2025, MMG Limited announced its agreement to acquire Anglo American's Brazilian nickel assets for up to US$500 million. The deal was expected to close in Q3 2025.
