The Indian government has been very active in making regulatory and policy changes in the domestic gas market over the past 5 years. Most of the changes by the government have targeted a move towards gas market liberalisation and upstream deregulation. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, LNG prices have increased and reached to unaffordable levels for the Indian LNG market. Therefore, the LNG consumption dropped by 20% in 2022. In recent months, the government has introduced new regulatory changes with an aim to improve gas and LNG affordability within the downstream sectors and support near and longer-term demand growth in the country.
