China gas and power month in brief: August 2016

Report summary
China's gas demand was disappointing again in July. However, while headline growth was 2.3% the real story was the dramatic drop in LNG imports and the strength of pipeline gas imports. The economic logic is not immediately obvious and we suspect that contractual issues were at the heart of this. Meanwhile, the pace of power demand growth continues to show signs of recovery and we see this as increasingly sustainable.
